As many as 186 traffic accidents occurred during the four-day holiday from August 30 to September 2, killing 114 people and injuring another 145.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, 184 road accidents claimed the lives of 111 people, while two railway accidents killed three people. On National Day alone, the country witnessed 63 accidents with 48 fatalities and 75 people injured. No accidents were reported for waterways.

The deadliest crash occurred in the northern province of Lao Cai on September 1. Twelve people died and 41 people were injured when a bus swerved to avoid an oncoming car. The driver then lost control of the vehicle and plunged into an abyss at approximately 7 pm in Bat Xat district. The vehicle was en route from the popular tourist town of Sa Pa to Lao Cai city.

In response to the accident, relevant government bodies, including the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Health, mobilised resources to provide assistance and medical treatment for survivors.

The Prime Minister conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and praised the efforts of the Ministry of Transport, the National Traffic Safety Committee, Lao Cai authorities and local people to rescue the victims in a timely manner.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.-VNA
