Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved 22 projects for providing electricity to rural areas and islands this year.

Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) is the co-ordinator of the projects, and the investors are the Northern Power Corporation, the Central Power Corporation and the Southern Power Corporation.

Twenty-one of the 22 projects will supply electricity to rural areas and islands from the national grid.

One project will provide electricity to the Bach Long Vi offshore district in the northern Hai Phong city from mixed sources such as wind, solar and diesel energies.

Dinh Quang Tri, Vice-General Director of EVN, said the projects would mainly focus on developing low and medium voltage electricity to ensure that all households in rural areas were electrified by 2020.

The projects will also provide electricity to mountainous areas, borderland security and coast guards, contributing to reducing poverty, enhancing people's intellectual standards and ensuring national security and defence.

The projects are expected to supply electricity to more than 262,500 households.-VNA
