Participants at a two-day workshop on
labour hygiene and safety in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
have agreed to boost labour safety and health service in ASEAN
countries during the 2010-2015 period.
Focus will
be placed on increasing cooperation among ASEAN countries as well as
between policy makers and safety and health service providers.
National and regional conferences on labour safety and hygiene will also be held.
The workshop, which concluded in Thai Nguyen province on March 13, is
to help ASEAN countries share information and exchange experiences in
order to seek solutions to mitigate losses caused by accidents at work.
Representatives from ASEAN countries as well as those from SMEs of
Vietnam’s Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Thua Thien-Hue and Dong Nai
provinces attended the workshop, which was part of a multilateral
cooperative programme between Japan , the International Labour
Organisation (ILO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
According to statistics, 6,000 labour accidents happened in Vietnam in
2009, mainly due to violations of labour hygiene and safety
regulations, killing 550 people and injuring 1,200 others./.
