The Cambodian People's
Party (CPP) has taken a commanding lead in the local elections, winning
control of 1,569 of the country’s 1633 communes, according to unofficial
initial results reported on June 3.
The CPP retained
control of all communes in all of the 13 cities and provinces, namely
Phnom Penh, K andal, Pursat, Preah Sihanouk, Svay Rieng, Ta Keo, Oddor
Meachay, Battambang, Kampot, Mondul Kiri, Kep, Pailin, Kratie và Koh
Kong.
The main opposition, the Sam Rainsy Party, came second, with the official results to be announced over the next few days.
Ten parties were vying for seats in the third local elections.
Cambodia’s National Elections Committee said that more than 60 percent
of the country’s 9.2 million population had voted.-VNA
