Violent clashes continue in several districts of Sittway, the capital of Rakhine State in western Myanmar , on June 12, in defiance of the state of emergency that was declared two days ago.

The villages involved are Aung Mingala, Ywathaya, Byaingphyu, Narzi, and Kathae. A 400 strong mob of rioters attacked Nazi Bazaar village but were dispersed by security forces, said the report.

Since violence broke out on June 8, 21 people have been killed and 21 others injured, with 1,662 houses and 6 stores set on fire, according to Myanmar ’s state-run radio.

Two refugee centres have been set up for Muslims, one in a school in Narzi village and one in Magyimyaing Mosque, local sources said, adding that so far the number of Muslim refugees was around 2,500.

Earlier, six refugee centres had been opened to accommodate 4,154 people from Rakhine, who have been left homeless by the rioting.

Myanmar ’s fourth National Assembly will convene on July 4 to discuss the recent clashes in Rakhine State.-VNA
