Former chairman of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines), Duong Chi Dung was arrested on September 4 following an international manhunt that lasted several months, according to police.

Dung has been charged with “intentionally violating State regulations on economic management, causing serious consequences” in accordance with Article 165, the Penal Code, during his time at the loss-making company.

He had been on the run since May 17 when an indictment and arrest warrant were issued for him, before finally being captured by the police on Sept. 4.

Earlier in July, police arrested six other people suspected of conspiring with Dung.

Under his leadership, a number of violations were made at the State-owned logistics company from 2007-10.

One blunder related to the purchase and repair of Floating Dock 83M. The initial cost was pegged at 14.13 million USD but later skyrocketed to 24.3 million USD. Originally built in 1965, it did not meet licensing registration requirements and has been unsuitable for use for years.

Dung, 55, was promoted to head of the Vietnam Maritime Department in February.-VNA
