More than 40 wireless internet transmitters are being installed in Ha
Long City in the northern province of Quang Ninh in April to provide a
free wifi service.
The work, carried out by the
Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation, at a cost of more than
200 billion VND, is expected to go into operation on April 20, just days
before the 2012 Ha Long Tourism Week.
Tourists and
local people will be able to access free wifi throughout the city, but
will be charged for using entertainment services or if they exceed the
download limit.
The Director of Quang Ninh’s Department
of Information and Communications, Nguyen Minh Hong, said the
construction of an information technology infrastructure is essential if
the city is to become a popular destination for tourist and investors.
The supply of free wifi hotspots in Ha Long is just
part of a project to install wireless internet coverage in Quang Ninh,
and is intended to cover every township and city in the province,
including Uong Bi, Cam Pha, Van Don, Mong Cai, by 2015.
Ha Long will be the second city to supply free wifi, after Hoi An, which launched a similar service last month.-VNA
