The World Bank (WB) and the Republic of Korea ’s Development Institute (KDI) jointly held a workshop in Hanoi on March 10 to share views on economics in the post-crisis period and the competitiveness of exports.

Speaking at the workshop, former Minister of Trade Truong Dinh Tuyen said that during the economic crisis, Vietnam ’s export value dropped due to the falling prices of goods. Therefore, the country has implemented several policies to boost exports and create favourable conditions for all businesses, he said.

The participation in free trade agreements (FTAs) has created a big jump for Vietnam in export growth. In particular, the FTA with the US has helped boost exports to the market by 15 times.

Vietnam is also building a development strategy for the 2011-2020 period, focusing on maintaining a growth rate of 7.5 percent within 10 years, he added.

Economic experts discussed measures to avoid an economic recession, including the diversification and increase of investment. Countries must be determined to improve their competitiveness, they said.

Yongding Yu, an expert from Beijing , said that the world economy is recovering but cannot return to that of the pre-crisis period.

Participants at the workshop also discussed such issues as the competitiveness of exports in Asia in general, and policies to boost it./.
