The Green Highways project 2009 torch
and flag relay, launched by the Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicles
Association (ANGVA), will come to Vietnam late this week.
The relay is to encourage the community to use natural gas instead of
energy sources producing waste harmful to the environment and people’s
health, Rizal H. Rahman, an ANGVA represenative, said at a press
briefing in Ho Chi Minh on Sept. 16.
Through the relay, the organising board called on residents in
localities along the route to respond to the event, thus forming future
“Green highways” in the Asia Pacific region.
Bui Minh Tien, Vice General Director of PetroVietnam Gas Company, which
is the event’s sole sponsor, emphasised that encouraging the use of
natural gas vehicles (NGV) in Vietnam aims to build a more green, clean
and beautiful future for the country, save on transport costs, and
support sustainable development.
The green highway project 2009 torch and flag relay consists of two
convoys of vehicles. One started in Teheran, Iran, journeying along
routes within Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and
China, where it will meet up with the other convoy, which started in
Surabaya, Indonesia, travelling through Indonesia, Singapore,
Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. From China they will travel
together to Donghae, in the Republic of Korea, where the ANGVA 2009
conference is taking place on Oct. 27-20.
In Vietnam, the convoy of vehicles will hand over an ANGVA Green
Highways Project torch and flag at the Cau Treo border gate in the
central province of Ha Tinh on Sept. 18. Then the relay will travel
through urban centres to Hanoi, and end its journey in Vietnam on
Sept. 21 at the Huu Nghi border gate, in the northern province of Lang
Son./.
