Myanmar becomes AIPA member

The 32nd General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-32) on Sept. 20 agreed to accept the Parliament of Myanmar as a full member of AIPA.

President of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin, Chairman of AIPA-32, signed to accept the Parliament of Myanmar as a fully fledged member of AIPA.

The same day, a ceremony was held to transfer the flag of Myanmar from the stance of AIPA special observer to that of an AIPA member country.

Myanmar conducted general elections and formed its parliament last year.

Addressing the ceremony, Khin Aung Myint, speaker of the Parliament of Myanmar, expressed sincere gratitude to AIPA for accepting the newly established parliament of Myanmar .

He pledged that the parliament of Myanmar will actively participate in all cooperative activities of AIPA, contributing towards further progress of the assembly.

AIPA-32 is being held from Sept. 18 to 24 in Cambodia , with participation of the heads of all parliaments of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and observers from Australia , Canada , China , the European Parliament, Japan , the Republic of Korea , India , New Zealand , Papua New Guinea , Russia and the United States .

AIPA-32 is expected to adopt a series of documents on political, economic, social and women affairs, rights of migrant workers, and combating drug crime, in order to build stronger cooperation and relations among ASEAN countries.

ASEAN groups Brunei , Cambodia , Indonesia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , the Philippines , Si ngapore , Thailand and Vietnam. /.
