Several gambling rings focusing on the Euro football championship have been busted in Ho Chi Minh City and over 50 people arrested, police say.

On June 25, police arrested three people who were allegedly part of a major football gambling ring.

Suspected ringleader Le Van Lung, 37, his wife Nguyen Tu Trinh, 34, and Le Anh Tuan, 22, all natives of the southern province of Dong Thap , were arrested at the Lucky Hotel in Tan Phong ward, district 7.

Police said the ring has several branches and agents, attracting bets running into the billions of dong every match. They said the ring has deployed "clever ruses" and operated for several years, attracting many rich gamblers. The ring's Euro Cup betting has attracted thousands of people.

A large amount of cash, a seven-seat car worth 4 billion VND (191,000 USD) as well as several notebooks and laptops containing information about the ring's activities during the ongoing Euro Cup competition have been confiscated.

The day before, Binh Chanh district police had arrested 49 people gambling on the match between Spain and France in two local coffee shops.

Each gambler in these cases laid bets of between 500,000 VND and 10 million VND (24-478 USD) on each match and the money was paid out as soon as the match was over, the police said.-VNA
