Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan is joining the Heads of States
and representatives of 190 out of the 193 UN members at the UN’s
Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro on June 20.
The conference themed ‘The future we want’ will focus
on reforming institutions concerned with sustainable development,
developing green economies and reducing poverty.
The
world’s leaders will set out targets and new criteria for sustainable
development and examine measures to eliminate unsustainable models of
production and consumption.
On the first day of the
conference, eight banks, including the World Bank, the Asian Development
Bank and the African Development Bank, pledged 175 billion USD to
develop sustainable transport systems over the next ten years.
On the eve of the conference, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said
the Rio+20 conference is a opportunity to place the world on the path
to sustainable development, where there is a balance between economies,
society, the environment and welfare systems.-VNA
