The VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange surpassed a milestone of 500 points to stand at 507 points in the last trading session of the lunar year 2009.

More than 22.1 million shares and certificates worth a total of 940 billion VND were transacted in the trading session--up 19 percent in volume and 13 percent in value over the previous session.

Sacombank (STB) was the market leader, with over 2.4 million shares sold, followed by Asia Huu Lien Joint-Stock Company (HLA) with 1.9 million, and Tan Dai Hung Plastic Joint-Stock Company (TPC) and Vinamilk (VNM) with more than 1 million.

Meanwhile, the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) index also increased 0.86 percent to close at 164.66 points.

According to securities experts, the gains on both of the country’s exchanges can be attributed to investor optimism in the prospects for trading sessions after the Lunar New Year festival (Tet)./.
