Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc came out only 36 th among 61 athletes in the 20km
women’s walking event at the London Olympics on August 11, but setting a
new national record of 1:33:36.
Although a long way
from any medal, Phuc was able to improve her time by 1 minute 37 seconds
compared to Asian Race Walking Championship in March this year, where
she came third.
Thanh Phuc was the last to compete among
the 18-strong Vietnamese delegate to London . Except for shooter
Hoang Xuan Vinh and weight-lifter Tran Le Quoc Toan who came very close
to the bronze medal, the other athletes were unable to make their mark
on the world’s largest sports event.
Vietnam has had
its representatives compete at Olympics since 1980, but so far local
athletes have been able to bring home only two medals. Taekwondo artist
Tran Hieu Ngan won a silver in Sydney in 2000 and weight-lifter Hoang
Anh Tuan got another silver in Beijing in 2008.-VNA
