After 11 days of competition, Vietnam held third position in the medal
tally with 96 golds, 90 silvers and 100 bronzes at the 26th Southeast
Asian Games in Indonesia on Nov. 21.
Hosts Indonesia took the lead with 170 golds, 146 silvers and 134
bronzes, while Thailand was the runner-up with 105 gold, 94 silver
and 118 bronze medals.
In the mixed-trio aerobic event,
the Vietnamese partnership of Nguyen Tien Phuong, Vu Ba Dong and Tran
Thi Thu Ha brought home a gold medal on Nov. 21.
Dong also won a silver medal in the men's singles after losing to Thailand 's Pimpa in the final.
On Nov. 21, Vietnamese wushu martial artists also shone at the Games, winning three gold medals.
In the women's U-48kg category, world champion Nguyen Thi Bich met no
difficulties in defeating rival Hla Hla Win of Myanmar in the final
match.
Soon after, female martial artist Tan Thi Ly won gold after beating Filipino Mariane B Mariano in the women's U-56kg final.
Phan Van Hau also performed well, crushing Filipino Benjie Rivera in the men's U-56kg final to bag gold.
In the women's individual standard chess event, young master Nguyen Thi
Mai Hung overcame Jose Rulp Ylem of the Philippines to win gold for
her chess team.
Meanwhile, Vietnam 's U23
football team lost 1-4 to Myanmar in the third place playoff match at
Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Nov. 21.
It was the worst defeat for Vietnam at the SEA Games since the country returned to regional sports in 1989.
In the final on Nov. 21, Malaysia beat Indonesia 74-3 in the
shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra time to win the trophy./.
