Vietnamese junior Nguyen Hoang Thien won the men's singles and doubles titles at the Hong Kong Open Junior Tennis Championships on Oct. 8.

The 16-year-old beat Thai rival Koaykul 2-0 (6-4, 7-5) in the final of the men's singles.

The HCM City native then joined Kevin Lam from Hong Kong in the men's doubles to defeat Hong Kong residents Wong Hun Hun and Yeung Pal Long 2-1 (6-2, 4-6, 11-9) in the final.

The wins added 12.5 points to Thien's score to take him to 135th place from 145th place in the International Tennis Federation rankings.

Thien is the first Vietnamese player to be admitted to the Australian Open Tennis Tournament for U-18 players. He will leave for Japan to compete in the ITF's U-18 event on October 17.

In February, Thien won the doubles title at the Malacca International Junior Championship for under-18 players in Kuala Lumpur and another at the Tennis Central 18 and under ITF Summer Championship in New Zealand . Thien attended training courses in the US in 2005, just two years after he started his tennis training at his age of eight. He hopes to reach the federation's top 100 junior ranking./.
