The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will coordinate with Vietnam General Confederation of Labour and Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee to organise activities marking 2012 World Environment Day (June 5) in the northern province.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Cach Tuyen said that Quang Ninh’s Ha Long city was chosen to host the day because of its great potential in natural resources and environment. The World Heritage area was also recently selected as one of seven new natural wonders.

National activities to mark this year’s celebrations will be held on June 4-5, including a seminar themed, “Green Economy - towards sustainable development and environmental preservation” to exchange information and share the model of environmental protection, towards building a green economy in Quang Ninh province.

A national commemoration event, with the participation of 3,000 people including leaders of Party, State, ministries and sectors and representatives from UN agencies, organisations for international development in Vietnam and local people, will also mark the day. After the meeting, an activity will be held to plant trees and mangroves.

At the announcement event, Patrick Jean Gilabert, Manager of the United Nations Industrial Development Programme and environmental experts spoke on the 2012 International Year of Sustainable Energy for All and issues relating to a green economy and green growth.


Since 1982, Vietnam has marked World Environment Day and it has become a specific and practical activity, contributing to improving community awareness of the need for environmental protection and sustainable development.
