The Vietnamese women’s football team will play Thailand at the semi-finals of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship after beating the Philippines 4-0 on May 6 to top Group B.

The Vietnamese team’s third consecutive victory confirmed its top position in Group B with 9 points. After beating Malaysia 4-0, Myanmar earned 6 points and received the second Group B ticket to the semi-final.

The semi-finals, taking place on June 8, will also see rivalries between U20 Australia and Myanmar.

The match between Vietnam and Thailand is considered a “predestined battle”; one year ago Thailand trounced Vietnam in a playoff heading to the 2015 World Cup.

The 2015 AFF Women’s Football Championship kicked off in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Stadium on May 1. This year’s tournament is the annual highlight for these teams, since women’s football is not included in competition categories at the 28th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 28) to be held in Singapore this June.

Vietnam has hosted the VFF Women’s Football Championship three times (in 2006, 2008, and 2012) since it was first held in 2006, bringing home the gold in 2006 and 2012./.
