Jakarta (VNA) - ASEAN women’s involvement in conflict prevention and peace building is still limited, said ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh on November 20.

The announcement was made on the occasion of launching the report of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) workshop on promoting women’s participation in peace process and conflict resolutions.

The Secretary General recalled a high-level conference held by the United Nations Security Council in October to promote the international commitment to increasing women’s involvement in conflict prevention and peace building. He highlighted that the ASEAN’s efforts as reviewed by AIPR remained restricted.

Minh appreciated AIPR’s recommendations to the issue, which include setting up a peace network for regional women, building peace negotiating training courses for women, and exploring partnership between the United Nations, AIPR and women in peace and security.

AIPR was established under the joint statement by leaders of the ASEAN member states, which was delivered during the 18th ASEAN Summit in Jakarta in May, 2011, Indonesia. In March, 2015, AIPR also held a conference to strengthen women’s participation in peace process and conflict resolutions in the Philippines.-VNA
