ASEAN and Germany have agreed to continue cooperative projects in environmental protection, climate change response, regional economic integration and capacity building.

The agreement came out from the ASEAN-Germany Joint Cooperation Committee’s 21st meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia, on January 28 after Germany’s past assistance to ASEAN was recognised as being very beneficial to the group.

Addressing the meeting, German Ambassador to ASEAN Georg Witschel laid special stress on the importance of Southeast Asia to Germany, reporting that his country has to date provided around 70 million EUR for projects and operations within ASEAN.

Lee Chen Chen, an ASEAN official, spoke highly of Germany’s assistance to ASEAN’s community-building efforts, noting that the group will work closely with Germany to step up a closer, highly efficient connection in national and regional activities.

The meeting also brought together representatives of economic and trade development and cooperation agencies of the EU, the EU’s Permanent Mission at ASEAN, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the KfW bank of Germany.-VNA
