The ninth meeting of the ASEAN Expert Group on Food Safety opened in Hanoi on October 17, attracting many healthcare experts in the region.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long, who chaired the meeting, said Vietnam is pleased to host the event, a chance to share information and experience in food safety management with ASEAN member countries as well as international friends.

Long emphasised that food pollution and disease transmission through food and foodstuff are threatening the health of the world community, particularly with growing international tourism and food trading activities.

The ASEAN Community should work together to strengthen the supervision of food safety in each country and fighting food safety violations through the building of legal documents, the setting up of a proper standard system in harmony with regional and international standards, said Long.

During the three-day meeting, experts from ASEAN member countries will discuss how to realise the proposals on food safety, the building of a food safety system meeting the international standard, helping consumers in the region have access to best quality and safe foodstuff./.VNA
