ASEAN senior officials convened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on April 25 for preparatory meetings for the upcoming 26th ASEAN Summit.

The Vietnamese delegation to the event was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung.

At the function, the senior officials reviewed preparations for foreign ministers’ meetings, scheduled for April 26, as well as the 26th ASEAN Summit.

They agreed on the working programme, the agenda, and documents to be submitted to the ASEAN Coordinating Council for approval before they are ratified by leaders of the regional countries at the 26th ASEAN Summit.

The officials substantively exchanged views on major issues relating to the building of the ASEAN Community in 2015 and the Community’s post-2015 Vision. They also discussed ways to improve the bloc’s apparatus and operation efficiency, its relations with partners, and its centrality in the region.

They consented to promote the grouping’s cooperation and role in settling regional challenges, including in employing measures to foster the effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and the formation of a code of conduct in the waters.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meetings will be held on April 26 to finalise preparations for the 26th ASEAN Summit, which will take place on April 26-27.
