ASEAN member states have strongly condemned the downing of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine on July 17, which killed all passengers and crew members on board.

In a joint statement issued on July 19, ASEAN foreign ministers expressed their shock at the tragic deaths of the 298 people of multiple nationalities on board the flight.

“Flight MH17 was flying over non-restricted airspace, and following a flight path which had been declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)”, the statement said.

Therefore, ASEAN foreign ministers called for a full, independent and transparent investigation into the catastrophe, emphasising that the work must not be hindered.
