The Ministry of Public Security’s Fire Prevent and Control Police and Search and Rescue Department and the Austrian company Frequentis signed in Hanoi on Feb. 22 a project on construction of a centre for management of firefighting and rescue.

The project, worth 9 million EUR with ODA from the Austrian government, includes the construction of five control centres for information and firefighting management in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City , Hai Phong and Da Nang cities and Binh Duong province.

Vietnam is vulnerable to fires and explosions as the country’s strong socio-economic development brings an increasing number of new urban areas, industrial zones, production establishments, trade and tourism centres.

It is necessary to build centres providing prompt, precise fire alarm signals and management of information and data system, as well as firefighting and rescue, helping improve efficiency and effectiveness in these activities.

Once completed, the control centres will help the projected localities become active in dealing with fires.

In 2011, 1,764 fires and 25 explosions took place nationwide, causing 84 deaths, 245 serious injuries and losses of nearly 600 billion VND (44 million USD). Fires also damaged 2,000 ha of forests.-VNA
