The Cambodian Ministry of Interior has allowed the opposition party to hold a three-day mass protest from October 23 at the capital’s Freedom Park, but during daytime only and overnight camping will not be permitted.

According a decision signed by Interior Minister Sar Kheng on October 21, the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) is allowed to stage a peaceful demonstration from 6am to 6pm.

It added that the number of protesters participating in the event must not exceed 10,000.

The CNRP is allowed to submit petitions to several foreign embassies in Cambodia regarding the election’s results. However, it should first contact each embassy in advance and must ensure safety for the activity.

The Interior Ministry’s decision was issued after a meeting between Phnom Penh’s mayor Khuong Sreng and a CNRP representative on the same day.

The CNRP expects 20,000 to 50,000 people to join the demonstration at the park, and about 20,000 of them to march through the streets.

Most of the embassies in Phnom Penh called upon the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and the CNRP to hold peaceful dialogue.-VNA
