Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s tourism authority said 2.5 million tourists visited attraction sites in the country during the Chol Chnam Thmey festival, Cambodia’s traditional New Year.

The ancient Angkor temple complex, the capital city of Khmer Empire, which flourished from approximately the 9th to 15th centuries, in Siem Reap province alone received 1.3 million tourists during the four-day festival.

The number, which included 300,000 international travellers, went up 30 percent compared with the same period last year, according to Cambodian Minister of Tourism Thong Khon.

Besides Siem Reap, attraction sites in Battambang, Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep provinces are also favourite destinations of holiday makers.

The minister said improvements have been seen in tourists’ awareness of environmental sanitation and traffic law in comparison with previous years.-VNA
