Phnom Penh (VNA) - The National Assembly (NA) of Cambodia has allowed legal proceedings against lawmaker Kem Sokha, President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

The decision was made during an unscheduled NA meeting on September 11 under the chair of NA President and President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party Samdech Heng Samrin. The meeting was boycotted by CNRP lawmakers.

Earlier on September 3, Sokha was arrested after a video, broadcast by the Australia-based Cambodian Broadcasting Network, showed that he and accomplices colluded with foreigners to plot against the Cambodian government.

He was charged with treason by the Phnom Penh municipal court last week.

The Cambodian NA has 123 seats, 68 of which is claimed by the CPP while the remaining by the CNRP. According to the law, a decision will be passed when half of them voted in favour.-VNA
