As many as 125 teams with 260 boats are participating in Cambodia’s traditional dragon boat racing which started on November 5.

The opening ceremony was attended by King Norodom Sihamoni, National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin, Prime Minister Hun Sen and members from the royal family, senate and government as well as thousands of Cambodians.

About 8,000 security personnel of the National Police and Military Police have been mobilised to keep order in the city during the event.

Dragon boat racing is the focus of Cambodia’s water festival, the biggest annual festival in the country. The race, dating back to the Yayvarrman reign in the 12th century, marks the Tonle Sap River’s annual change of direction.

The traditional boat racing has been postponed for four years since 2010 after 353 people were trampled to death or suffocated in a stampede on Koh Pich bridge in the festival.-VNA
