Ottawa (VNA) – Bilateral cooperation between Canada and Laos will reach a new milestone as Canada will officially open an embassy in the Lao capital of Vientiane this week.

According to a statement of Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Stephane Dion during his visit to Laos, he will meet with Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith, and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sommad Pholsena.

The meetings will focus on boosting bilateral cooperation and discussing several issues relating to the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), he added.

On the occasion, Minister Dion will attend the opening of the Canadian Embassy, Canada’s first resident diplomatic mission in Laos, marking a new step in bilateral relations and enhancing Canadian engagement with ASEAN member states.

He is also participating in the ASEAN-Canada Post-Ministerial Conference and the ASEAN Regional Forum to be held on July 25-26 to discuss critical regional and international security issues and the means to build greater stability in the broader region.-VNA
