A failure in the hydraulic brake system in the scaffold structure is behind the March 25 collapse at the Vung Ang economic zone in central Ha Tinh province.

The conclusion was announced during a press conference in the locality on March 27, during which Kim Hyung Sub, Deputy General Director of the project’s contractor Samsung C&T, admitted his company’s remiss in operating the scaffold at the site.

He promised to address the consequences of the accident and thanked the Vietnamese Government and local authorities for their timely support.

The incident occurred at 8 pm on March 25 with around 100 workers on the 30 metre construction site scaffold at the Taiwanese-invested Formosa steel complex project.

As of 5 pm on March 26, 13 had been declared dead and 28 sustained injuries in the accident.

Immediately after the incident, the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) announced a grant worth 1 million VND (50 USD) on March 26 to each of the injured victims and 3 million VND (142 USD) to each bereaved family.

The same day, a delegation led by VRCS Deputy General Secretary Dang Minh Chau visited and presented gifts to the injured in Ha Tinh General Hospital.

The provincial VRCS delegation also visited 9 other victims in Ky Anh district general hospital.-VNA
