The central city of Da Nang has offered to host the 2015-16 Clipper Race, a yacht sailing race comprised of amateur competitors, the city's secretariat confirmed on June 24.

It is not decided, but the central city will likely serve as the checkpoint for the Vietnamese leg in Race 8, the Asia Pacific Challenge.

A source from the city's committee said Da Nang will plan to welcome the racing boats sometime between January or March next year.

The 2015-16 Clipper Race, starting this August 30, will be the 10th anniversary series of the bi-annual event.

Over 400 crews have signed up, representing 28 nationalities.

It is the only race of its kind for amateur sailors, racing around the world with a diverse crew representing 100 different occupations and prior seafaring experience.

As scheduled, the Clipper Race fleet will leave London's St Katharine Docks, parade down the River Thames and start the 40,000-mile round the world yacht race this August.-VNA
