Total fatalities from tropical storm Nari and following floods in the central region have climbed to 10, according to the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control on October 17.

Six deaths were in Quang Binh province, three in Quang Nam and one in Nghe An province. Five people are still missing.

The committee’s report said a total of 548 houses collapsed or were swept away, while 12,515 others were damaged, as were around 450 classrooms in 20 schools and office buildings of 37 in the region.

Many areas are still deeply under water, forcing the evacuation of 8,580 people.

On the bright side, the railway sector has resumed service on the North-South route on the morning of October 17, with five trains carrying thousands of passengers departing from Dong Hoi Station.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warns that the water levels on rives in the central region will continue to rise, urging the provinces of Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa to stay on alert.-VNA
