China and Malaysia have agreed to upgrade their bilateral ties to comprehensive strategic partnership.

The agreement was reached during the talks between visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and the host Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on October 4.

The two leaders highly valued achievements the sides have made, having in-depth discussions on promoting comprehensively their bilateral ties in the new context.

China attaches importance to the ties with Malaysia, said President Xi, affirming the relations take the lead among those with other ASEAN member states.

China acknowledges Malaysia’s increasing position in the region, he announced, asserting it will continue strongly supporting ASEAN central role in East Asia cooperation.

Besides, the two sides set targets for economic-trade cooperation within the next five years, reaching consensus on raising two-way trade up to 160 billion USD by 2017.

China is currently Malaysia’s biggest trade partner over the four consecutive years, and Malaysia is China’s largest trade partner over the last five years with bilateral trade turnover hitting 94.8 billion USD in 2012.-VNA
