Da Nang (VNA) - A model featuring a sailing boat used in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2015-2016, one of the most competitive and challenging sports activities in the world, is being showcased in the central coastal city of Da Nang from November 30.

The model, 6 metres by 1.4 metres by 7.5 metres in size, was placed near the Rong (Dragon) Bridge to popularise the racing event. It will be on display until February.

Twelve teams started the 40,000-nautical-mile, round-the-world voyage from London’s St. Katharine Docks in August, 2015, crossing 138 countries and territories and international ports such as Rio de Janeiro, Sydney and New York before docking at its starting point in July.

They are expected to arrive in Da Nang on February 17 and stay 11 days.

Da Nang is the first official Southeast Asian host port for this 19-year-old yacht race. Australian professional skipper Wendy Tuck, 50, will lead the Da Nang-Vietnam team during the race with 58 crew members.

In addition to affirming the city’s capability of organising international events, the race’s global platform is an excellent opportunity for Vietnam and Da Nang to boost international trade, investment, their economies and tourism while enhancing social, cultural and diplomatic relations with many countries along the race route.

The event will stream live on CNN, BBC and Discovery with as many as 4.4 billion viewers.-VNA
