Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai issued an order to kick off construction on T2 terminal at Hanoi 's Noi Bai International Airport on December 4.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Deputy PM Hai praised efforts made by the Ministry of Transport, Hanoi city and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in preparing for the project.

He emphasised the importance of the construction of the terminal, saying that once completed, it will help ease the overload at the T1 terminal and give an overall facelift to the Noi Bai airport.

According to the Northern Region Aviation Corporation, the terminal, designed to have four floors with a space area of 140,000 sq.m, will be built at a cost of over 75 billion JPY (960 million USD), including 59 billion JPY from Japan’s ODA loan.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2014 and will be able to handle 10-15 million passengers per year by 2020.

After 2020, the Government will consider investment in T3 and T4 terminals in order to raise the Noi Bai Airport ’s annual capacity to 50 million passengers.

The T1 terminal welcomed more than 9.5 million passengers in 2010 and is estimated to receive 11 million this year./.
