Vietnam saved a total of 56.9 billion kWh of electricity in five years, 2006-2010, an official of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) said on March 25.

At a meeting to review the national target programme on economical and efficient use of energy for the 2006-2010 period, MoIT Deputy Minister Hoang Quoc Vuong said the amount saved was equivalent to 3.4 percent of the country’s total consumed energy.

In implementing the programme, the National Assembly passed the Law on Using Energy Economically and Effectively, which came into effect on January 1, 2011, the Deputy Minister said, adding that during the period, many effective projects were conducted, contributing to reducing energy costs and increasing business competitiveness.

The total budget for the 2006-2010 period was 169.1 billion VND, according to the progamme’s Steering Committee.

In order to implement the programme’s target in the second phase, between 2011-2015, which aims to save 5-8 percent of energy, cooperation between ministries, branches, localities, organisations and social community is required, Deputy Minister Vuong said.

At the same time, it is necessary to take advantage of international support to boost the efficiency of the programme, he said./.
