The world No 35 lost to world No 19 Jae-Cho Ho of the Republic of Korea 3-1 (15-2, 15-14, 15-11, 15-12) in the semi-final.
Cuong's success was unexpected. Earlier, he defeated world No 2 Caudon Frederic.
It is the second achievement in four years for Vietnam 's carom 3-cushion participants in the World Cup. At the 2007 Suwon World Cup, HCM City 's Tran Chi Thanh was runner-up.
Vietnam sent seven players from HCM City to compete at the event which wrapped up on Sept. 5. It attracted more than 100 players, including those in the top 15.
Vietnamese players were able to hone their skills for the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia in November./.
