Currency history exhibition opens to mark Liberation Day
Vietnamese currencies through history has been featured at an exhibition that opened in Ho Chi Minh City on April 27 on the occasion of 42nd anniversary of the Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and International Museum Day (May 18).
Some of Vietnamese notes (Source: Internet)On the display are 700 objects of circulated currencies and related documents such as land sale paperwork, decrees on money printing and decisions on money issuance.
The exhibits are arranged into different history stages: currency in monarchy (from the 10th to the 20th century), currency in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (1945-1975), currency in the Republic of Vietnam (1955-1975), currency of the National Liberation Front (1963-1978) and currency in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (1978-now).
Visitors to the exhibition will also see other types of currency used during the two resistant wars against France and the US, as well as precious objects such as the gold coin worth 20 dong (1948), and collections of coins and silver bars in the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) and plates for money printing.
According to Hoang Anh Tuan, director of the Vietnam History Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s first coin “Thai Binh hung bao” was minted under the Dinh Dynasty (968-980). Various kinds of currencies have come into being throughout history.
Coming to the exhibition, visitors will gain insight in the Vietnamese currency history, which helps raise public awareness to preserve and promote national cultural heritage, he said.
