Japan’s Kawasaki city has donated more than 10,000 bicycles, worth almost 20 billion VND, to poor students in the central city of Da Nang and Quang Nam province over the past ten years.

Implemented by the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association (JVFA) in Kawasaki in conjunction with the Union of Friendship Organisations in Da Nang, the programme has helped a huge number of disadvantaged students to travel to school and build a life for themselves.

The programme has strengthened the friendship between the two cities and the countries at large.

Miyahara Haruo, Chairman of the JVFA in Kawasaki has played a key role in the programme. He persuaded Kawasaki city’s governor to present the bicycles and successfully collected donations to pay for the bike transportation costs.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the ten year anniversary of the programme in Da Nang on August 22, Haruo pledged that the bicycle donations would continue.

He added that that the two sides will also further cooperate in several other fields in the future.-VNA
