Nghe An (VNA) – Authorities and locals in Dien Thinh commune, in Dien Chau district of central Nghe An province buried a dead whale weighing around 7 tonnes, on May 27.

The 10m long whale was found in the morning when it was floating 2 nautical miles off the Dien Thinh coast.

It was then towed to the mainland by two fishing boats and one fisheries surveillance ship.

Previously on May 25, a 15m long, 15 tonne whale stranded on the coast of Dien Thinh was rescued and safely released back to sea.

Whales are considered holy by Vietnamese fishermen and many fishing communities worship whales in local temples with festivals held to pray for good catch and safety at sea.-VNA
