Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Defence Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh has praised the results of a cooperation agreement signed with the US Department of Defence in December 2011.

Vinh reviewed the outcomes of bilateral ties between the two countries on May 28 while receiving Acting US Assistant Secretary of State Joseph Y. Yun, who is in Hanoi for the Vietnam-US Dialogue on the Asian Pacific region.

The host said that progress had been made in the last 18 months thanks to the framework put in place through the 2011 agreement.

He also looked ahead to 2013, updating his guest on the status of cooperation projects that are set to take pace later this year.

Yun announce his hope that both nations would continue promoting bilateral cooperation in defence, as well as economics, trade development and education.

Both sides called for their respective defence agencies to work together closely in the search for the remains of US servicemen missing in action during the war in Vietnam.

They also committed to continuing defusing bombs and landmines left over from the conflict and providing humanitarian aid.-VNA
