The Dien Bien Phu Victory on May 7, 1954, which helps end the French colonial rule in Vietnam, is at the heart of a conference held in the northwestern city of Dien Bien Phu on March 20.

Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyen Thanh Cung recalled the great triumph recorded by the Vietnamese people and soldiers 60 years ago under the leadership and skilful strategies of the Party and late President Ho Chi Minh, describing it as a golden milestone in national construction and defence.

The Senior Lieutenant General also highlighted the conference as an occasion for the whole Party, armed forces and people to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the victory.

The event unveiled the plot of the French colonialists and underlines the sound and creative people-based war strategy designed by the Vietnamese Party, President Ho Chi Minh and late General Vo Nguyen Giap, as well as the lessons drawn from the campaign – altogether helping fuel patriotism and self-reliance among the masses.

It also features the alliance between the Indochina countries, namely Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, along with the support and assistance from international friends, especially the Soviet Union and China, that contributed to the victory over the French with Dien Bien Phu being the peak of the triumph, said deputy head of the Politics General Department Mai Quang Phan.

Alongside the famous historical site Dien Bien Phu, Dien Bien province is also home to famous sightseeing spots such as the Muong Nhe primitive jungle, Hua Pe and U Va hot springs, and the Pa Khoang and Huoi Pa lakes.-VNA
