A two-day stakeholders meeting for a project on elimination of elephantiasis, trachoma and intestinal worm in Vietnam for the 2011-2015 period has been held in Hanoi by the Health Ministry and the US Agency for International Development (USAIDS).

Addressing the Sept. 8-9 event, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen proposed donors, including foreign and domestic organisations and individuals, to support the prevention of neglected tropical diseases.

From 2014-2016, Vietnam expects to eliminate the tropical diseases with assistance from international donors and the Government, she said.

“ Vietnam has made impressive achievements in controlling neglected tropical diseases,” US Ambassador David Shear said. “This success can and must be documented and shared to help other countries achieve similar results.”

At the event, international and Vietnamese experts discussed the real situation of tropical diseases in Vietnam and WHO’s lessons in controlling these diseases and its warnings as well as a plan to join Vietnam to eliminate the diseases during 2014-2016.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) set to eliminate the tropical diseases in the period of 2000-2020 around the world./.
