Long An (VNA) – Heavy rain fell on parts of the Mekong Delta province of Long An at 16:00 pm on April 27, cooling the locality after months of intense heat and drought.

The downpour, which lasted more than one hour, gave relief to drought-hit crops in local districts like Ben Luc, Thu Thua, Tan Tru and Tan An city.

More rain will fall in the next few days before the temperature soars again, the province’s Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said, adding that the drought is likely to ease when the rainy season arrives by the end of May.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, drought and saltwater intrusion have damaged more than 8,600 hectares of rice in the locality, causing approximately 100 billion VND (4.48 million USD) in economic losses.

Farmers have also left a large area of land fallow due to water shortages while thousands of households have not had water for daily use.
