The Vietnam Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) and China ’s KAIDI Electric Power Co. Ltd signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth 429.5 million USD for the Mao Khe Thermoelectric Power Plant, in Hanoi on July 7.

Under the 42-month contract, KAIDI will undertake the entire construction adn equipment installation of the plant, from the initial survey to test runs, personnel training and maintenance.

Invested by Vinacomin, the Mao Khe Thermoelectric Power Plant in the coal-mining province of Quang Ninh will include two turbines with a combined capacity of 440MW and consume dust coal from Mao Khe, Trang Bach, Khe Chuoi and Hong Thai mines to generate electricity.

Covering 72ha in Dong Trieu district, Quang Ninh province, the well-equipped power plant will be built at a total cost of over 577 million USD.

Work on the 577 million USD plant is scheduled to commence on July 8. Once operational in 2012, it is expected to provide around 2.6 billion kWh of electricity for the national grid per year.

On the same day, Vinacomin and the Vietnam Export-Import Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Eximbank) signed a 56 million USD credit contract for the EPC package, under which the bank will provide the loan at an annual interest rate of 4.5-4.8 percent for a 13-year period.-Enditem
