Family is the core strength of Vietnamese people, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan at a meeting held in Hanoi to mark Vietnamese Families’ Day which falls on June 28.

As many as 140 outstanding cultural families of ethnic minority groups attended the event, which is part of the Vietnam Family Festival 2013’s activities hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in response to the Vietnam Year of Family 2013.

Addressing the meeting, Deputy PM Nhan conveyed the best wishes to all Vietnamese families living in the country and abroad.

He said family is the cell of society and a firm ground for building a healthy and sustainable society, adding that Vietnam’s Party, State and organisations always attach importance to shaping families to be prosperous, progressive and happy.

According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Huynh Vinh Ai, the structure of Vietnamese families has seen changes due to impacts of modern life, industrialisation and global integration.

Numerous problems such as divorce and homosexual marriage have emerged in Vietnamese family life while domestic violence is on the increase, he said.

The aforementioned problems affect the future of Vietnamese families that contribute to the country’s general development, he added.
