Hanoi (VNA) – Floods triggered by torrential rains have killed four people, injured 12 and left one missing in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri as of November 3 morning.

According to the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, two of the deaths and the missing were reported in Quang Binh province while the other deaths were in Quang Tri.

Heavy rains and foods also caused seven houses to collapse, damaged 16 houses and inundated 367 others. Up to 35 hectares of rice and 261 hectares of crops and plants were submerged while 182 cattle heads and 6,070 heads of poultry, mostly in Quang Binh, were swept away.

Weather forecast said between now and November 11, the central provinces will experience more heavy rains with total rainfall estimated at between 50-100 mm. Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces are predicted to see rainfalls of between 100-250 mm.

To cope with the situation, the Prime Minister has issued Dispatch 1925, requiring the cities and provinces from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue and ministries to promptly take countermeasures.

A working group of the steering committee headed by a Deputy Director of the General Department of Irrigation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) is inspecting disaster response in provinces from Ha Tinh to Binh Dinh.

In the same vein, the MARD has also issued documents instructing localities to ensure safety for reservoirs and aquaculture farms.

The central localities are stepping efforts to address the consequences and cope with the upcoming torrential rains.

People in Ha Tinh province have been helped with building makeshift houses and cleaning up the environment. They also received 3,400 kg of maize seeds for cultivation.

Quang Tri mobilised over 600 soldiers, one ship, 11 motorboats and hundreds of vehicles to evacuate 804 households in submerged areas of Cam Lo, Dakrong and Huong Hoa districts and Dong Ha city to safe places.-VNA
