The Government on July 29 signed a decision to establish the Fund of Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms under the Ministry of Health.

Regulated by the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms , the fund’s goal is to mobilise and allocate its financial resources for the prevention and control of tobacco harms throughout the country.

Operated on a not-for-profit principal, the fund will support such activities as popularising the negative impacts of tobacco, putting into reality pilot models of smoke-free working places before expanding effective models.

It will also engage in organising designated smoking areas in public places, and support the establishment of community-based services to help smokers give up the habit.

The fund is established with the financial resources from the compulsory contributions of tobacco manufacturers and importers as well as donations from national and international organisations and individuals.-VNA
