The funeral for General Vo Nguyen Giap who died in Hanoi on October 4 started nationwide at 7.30am on October 12.

At the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi, the legendary General lay in state, wrapped in a national flag.

Top leaders including Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung started the funeral by paying their last homage to the deceased.

They were followed by delegations of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of Defence.

Also paying their respect to General Giap were former Party General Secretaries Do Muoi, Le Kha Phieu and Nong Duc Manh; former Presidents Tran Duc Luong and Nguyen Minh Triet; former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai; former National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An; and former Chairmen of the Fatherland Front Pham The Duyet and Huynh Dam.

After observing a minute of silence in memory of the deceased, leaders and former leaders took turn to bid farewell to General Vo Nguyen Giap, a staunch and exemplary communist fighter who rendered great contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

Similar ceremonies were also started at the same time in Ho Chi Minh City in the south and General Giap’s home province of Quang Binh in the central region.-VNA
