Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese workers in Qatar, where diplomatic tension with Gulf countries is escalating, will be evacuated if the situation becomes complicated, said the Department of Overseas Labour under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

At a press meeting on June 12, Deputy Director of the department Tong Hai Nam said according to businesses’ statistics, there are 1,100 Vietnamese workers in Qatar, not 1,800 people like initial data showed.

To protect them, the Department of Overseas Labour asked companies that sent workers to Qatar to continue reviewing the number of labourers to help repatriate them if necessary.

Nam said if diplomatic sanctions are imposed on Qatar, the livelihood of those repatriated will not be impacted as Qatar is one of the countries with the highest per capita income in the world.

Most Vietnamese workers in the country work for contractors who are responsible for protecting their employees’ interests, he added.

Also at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Doan Mau Diep noted from June 2016 through May 2017, 17,747 people in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue went to work abroad. They benefitted from a programme assisting local labourers impacted by the marine pollution caused by Formosa.-VNA
